Kuwait is a very small nation compared to the other surrounded countries; Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Iran. Kuwait came into prominence after the Iraqi invasion of the country in 1990. Kuwait’s oil wealth has attracted people from many parts of the globe and now more than half (67%) of its 3.6 million people are non-nationals. About 85% of the population is Muslim (Sunni 70%, Shi’a 30%); around 13% are Christian of various denominations with the remaining of minority religions such as Hindus, Buddhists and Sikhs. Of the Christian Community that comprises largely of the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Church, there is approximately 2% that come under the category of Evangelical Christians. There is a small Kuwaiti (local) Christian community of 150 persons and there is also a
Kuwaiti Pastor heading the National Evangelical Church in Kuwait.
Christianity first came to Kuwait via the American Mission Hospital which was supported by the Reformed Church of America. Christians from various countries over the years have played a key role in the providing of various medical and educational services in the country and continue to do so to this day. All Christian worship services have to be held within the licensed church compounds and there are over 80 congregations meeting at these compounds through the week at various times.
Over the last year, Derek Prince Ministries have made inroads into this country by working with various churches and distributing DPM books that are sold through the official Christian book shops such as the Bible Society Resource Center found in the National Evangelical Church Compound.
